Is a Wedding Content Creator Worth It? 8 Questions to Ask Before You Hire One

When a wedding content creator is worth the money, when it is not, and the eight questions that tell a professional apart from someone with a new phone.

Honest answer first: not for every wedding. (New to the idea? Start with what a wedding content creator is and what you get.) Here is when a wedding content creator earns the money, when it does not, and the eight questions that tell a professional apart from someone with a new phone.

When it is not worth it

  • You do not use social media, and neither does your family.
  • It is an elopement with ten guests, and all ten are standing next to you.
  • You have to choose between this and a photographer. Choose the photographer.

When it is

  • Half the family is in another country and wants to watch tonight, not next month.
  • You want to put your phone in a drawer and be at your own party.
  • You know your friends will film the first thirty seconds of everything and then, rightly, go dance.
  • It is a quinceañera, a Sweet 16 or a company event, where the content is half the point.

Eight questions to ask before you hire one

Anyone can buy a stabilizer. These questions tell you who has actually worked a wedding.

  1. How many weddings or events have you covered next to a professional photo and video team? Experience with a phone is not experience with a ceremony.
  2. Will you talk to my photographer and videographer before the day? The right answer is yes, without being asked.
  3. Where do you stand during the ceremony, the kiss and the first dance? Beside or behind the main cameras. Never in the aisle, and never with a phone raised in front of a lens.
  4. What do you post live, and what waits? You want a plan, not “everything.”
  5. Who approves what goes up, and can I give you a do-not-post list? People, moments, children, the dress before the ceremony.
  6. Which account do you post from, and what happens to the login afterwards? Yours as a collaborator, or an event account that is handed over to you.
  7. When do I get every clip, and how? A date and a download link, in writing.
  8. What do you use for sound? Vows and toasts recorded with a phone microphone from across the room are hard to use. Ask for wireless microphones.

Red flags

  • No planning call before the event.
  • “I just follow the photographer around.”
  • Someone who knows how to step in but not when to disappear.
  • Reels promised “in a couple of weeks.” The whole point is tonight.
  • A price that leaves out travel or extra hours.
