Short answer: start your beach maternity session about 75 minutes before sunset, pick a beach with parking close to the sand, aim for a low or falling tide so you have firm ground to walk on, and shoot between November and April if you can choose. Everything else is detail.
Beach maternity photos are the most-requested look in South Florida, and the ones most likely to go wrong — not because of the photographer, but because of timing. Here’s how to get it right.
Golden hour is not one hour
Golden hour is the stretch when the sun sits low enough to turn warm and soft instead of white and harsh. On a South Florida beach, the usable window is roughly the last 75 to 90 minutes before sunset, and the quality changes fast within it.
- 75–45 minutes before sunset: warm, directional light. Best for full-length portraits and walking shots.
- 45–15 minutes before: peak golden light and sun flare. This is where the images you’re picturing get made.
- The 20 minutes after sunset: soft blue and pink light with no harsh shadows. Underrated, and beautiful for close, quiet portraits.
Arrive at the start of the window, not the middle. Walking out, settling in and getting comfortable takes ten minutes, and that’s ten minutes of the best light gone.
The tide matters more than people expect
Wet, compacted sand near the waterline is dramatically easier to walk and stand on than dry, soft sand — and at 34 weeks pregnant, that difference is real. A low or falling tide also gives you a wide open stretch to work with and often leaves a reflective sheen on the sand that photographs beautifully.
A rising tide at sunset squeezes you into soft dry sand up near the dune line. Check a tide chart for your date before you commit to a time.
Season: what nobody tells you until you’re standing there
November through April is the reliable window. Lower humidity, calmer weather, comfortable temperatures at sunset, and generally cleaner beaches.
May through October is doable but demands planning. Expect heat and humidity that stay high into the evening, near-daily afternoon storms, and heavier seaweed. If your due date puts you here, shoot at sunset rather than any earlier, bring water, and have a rain plan from day one.
Practical things worth sorting out
- Parking distance. Ask specifically how far the walk is from the lot to the shooting spot. This is the number one comfort factor in the third trimester.
- Wind is your friend. Long, light fabric moving in the breeze is what makes beach maternity photos feel alive. Choose a dress that will actually catch it.
- Barefoot is best. Shoes rarely appear under a long dress, and sand is easier without them.
- Bring water and a towel. Non-negotiable in summer.
- Confirm the rain policy. Ours: reschedule at no charge, or move to a covered alternative.
Sunset times shift by more than an hour
In South Florida, sunset lands around 5:30 pm in December and closer to 8:15 pm in June. That completely changes when your session starts — a December shoot begins mid-afternoon, a June shoot begins after most people finish work.
If you have older kids, the December timing is much friendlier to bedtime. If you want an evening session without taking time off, summer works in your favor.
