The House of Refuge at Gilbert’s Bar is the oldest standing building in Martin County, and it still looks like it did to the sailors who were rescued there. The museum grounds are open and green, with room for kids to move, and the building gives every photo a clear sense of place. Walk ten minutes and you are on the rocks with the Atlantic behind you. Nothing looks like the usual sand-and-sunset shot, so your photos stand out on the wall and on the holiday card.
Go early. Sunrise over the rocks gives soft, warm light and almost no crowd, and kids are still fresh. Late afternoon also works, but the rocks get busier and the light turns harsher on the lawn.
The museum charges a small admission fee and is open roughly 10 AM to 4 PM, Monday to Saturday, and 1 PM to 4 PM on Sunday. Fees and hours change, so check the museum’s own page before your date. Sunrise photos on the rocks happen before the museum opens, and I confirm what is allowed on the grounds before we book the day.
