LinkedIn Headshots: What Makes a Profile Photo Work
Your LinkedIn photo is the most-viewed image of your professional life. It shows up in search results, in someone’s inbox before a meeting, next to every comment you leave. Most people upload a cropped wedding photo and leave it there for six years.
What a good LinkedIn photo has to do
It has one job: make a stranger decide, in under a second, that you look like someone worth replying to. Not glamorous. Not intimidating. Reachable and competent.
The crop is the whole game
LinkedIn shows your photo as a small circle. Anything below your chest disappears. A full-body shot becomes a face the size of a pea, which is why so many profiles look like a smudge in the feed.
Frame tight: head and shoulders, eyes roughly a third of the way down. Test it by shrinking the image on your phone until it is the size of a thumbnail. If you cannot read the expression, neither can a recruiter.
Look at the camera
Profile photos where the subject looks away photograph beautifully and perform badly. Eye contact is what creates the sense that you are addressing the person scrolling. Save the looking-off-into-the-distance frames for your website header.
The background should be boring
A clean wall, a blurred office, soft greenery. If someone can identify the restaurant behind you, the background is too busy. Blur helps, but it does not rescue clutter — it just makes clutter softer.
About smiling
Smile if you smile. The photos that fail are the ones where someone performs an expression that is not theirs — a forced grin, or a serious face held so hard it reads as annoyed. A good photographer talks to you until your actual face shows up, then takes the picture.
Signals that quietly hurt you
- A visible crop line from someone else’s shoulder. Everyone can tell.
- Sunglasses, hats, heavy filters. They read as hiding.
- A photo from a decade ago. Meeting you afterward becomes a small awkward moment you did not need.
- Low resolution. LinkedIn compresses hard, so a soft file becomes mush.
How often to update it
Every two to three years, or any time your look changes noticeably: new glasses, a beard gone, hair much shorter or grayer. Also update it when your role changes, because the version of you at the head of a team can look different from the version who was starting out.
