Short answer: for maternity photos in Palm Beach County, the strongest locations are the beaches along Palm Beach and Singer Island for open ocean and golden light, the banyan-lined paths and gardens near downtown West Palm Beach for shade and greenery, and the open equestrian fields of Wellington for warm, backlit grass at sunset. Which one is right depends less on the view and more on how far you want to walk in your third trimester.
Here’s an honest breakdown of each — including the practical stuff most location lists leave out.
Beach locations: the classic South Florida look
This is what most moms picture: white dress, wind, ocean, sun dropping behind you. It genuinely is beautiful here — our light between November and April is hard to beat anywhere in the country.
What makes a beach work for maternity:
- A short walk from parking. At 34 weeks, a half-mile trek across soft sand is not a small ask. The best beach for you is often the one with the closest lot.
- A west-facing or open horizon for backlight and sun flare.
- Firm sand near the waterline — much easier to walk and stand on than dry sand higher up.
What to plan around: seaweed season (sargassum tends to be heaviest late spring through summer), afternoon storms in the wet season, and tide timing — a low or falling tide gives you far more firm sand to work with.
Parks and greenery near downtown West Palm Beach
If the beach look isn’t yours, or you’re shooting in July when the sand is a furnace, the tree canopy in and around downtown West Palm Beach is the better call. Large banyans and mature palms create soft, filtered light that’s flattering at almost any hour — which means you’re not locked into a strict golden-hour window.
This is also the most comfortable option in the third trimester: shade, benches, restrooms and short walking distances.
Wellington: open fields and equestrian light
Wellington’s open, grassy landscape gives you something the coast can’t — tall backlit grass and long, unbroken sightlines at sunset. It photographs warm and golden with a completely different feel from beach work: quieter, softer, more pastoral.
Best from late fall through spring, when the grass is dry and the light stays gold for longer.
At home: the most underrated option
The nursery you spent months on. Morning light through a bedroom window. Your dog on the bed beside you. In-home maternity sessions have become genuinely popular, and for good reason — there’s no travel, no heat, no wind, no wardrobe logistics, and they hold up emotionally in a way location shoots sometimes don’t.
All you need is one room with a decent window.
Which one should you pick?
| If you want… | Go with… |
|---|---|
| Dramatic sunset and ocean | Palm Beach / Singer Island shoreline |
| Shade, comfort, easy walking | Downtown West Palm Beach parks |
| Warm golden fields | Wellington |
| Intimacy and zero logistics | Your home |
| To shoot in summer | Shade or in-home — not open beach at midday |
Three things to sort out before you pick
- How far can you comfortably walk? Answer this honestly for how you’ll feel at 34 weeks, not how you feel today.
- What time is sunset on your date? It swings by more than an hour across the year here. Your session should start roughly 75 minutes before it.
- What’s your rain plan? In the wet season you need one. Ours is simple: we reschedule at no charge, or move to a covered alternative.
